Mark your calendars. Santa comes on Christmas, the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano in March, and Kyle Robertson of The Columbus Dispatch wins the ONPA clip POY title in February. For the seventh year in a row it is so.
Robertson now has more titles than Tom Brady hasSuper Bowl rings. The quarterback has seven, and the photojournalist now has eight, and there is still time to widen the gap as Brady has recently retired.
Robertson had 47 wins during the year, which matched his 2020 total. He placed in all eight categories over the course of the year with thirteen of his wins placing first in the category.
For the fourth time in the past five years Jeremy Wadsworth from The Blade finished second. His co-worker Rebecca Benson placed third. The Blade had four photographers place in the top ten with Kurt Steiss placing fourth and Amy Voigt placing eighth.
Lori King spoke with Robertson for the most recent episode of The Buckeye Journalist where he talks about camera gear, lighting and his shooting philosophy and about changes at The Dispatch during his 17 years in Columbus. The father of two young hockey players even divulges when he plans to hang up his cameras to become a full-time hockey dad.
