Fred Squillante from The Columbus Dispatch and Bill Lackey from the Springfield News-Sun have been chosen Ohio News Photographers of the Year for 2009 by the Ohio News Photographers Association.


Finishing second in the small market division was Marshall Gorby from the Springfield News-Sun and third was Tessa Bargainnier, a student from Kent State University. Finishing second in the large market division was Gus Chan from The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer and third was John Kuntz from The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer. Michael E. Keating from the Cincinnati Enquirer received an Award of Excellence in the category.


Gus Chan won the James R. Gordon Ohio Understanding Award for “Catholic Church Closings”, which told the story of a the downsizing of the Diocese of Cleveland, with the closing of more than 50 churches.


Diego James Robles from Ohio University won the Student Photographer of the Year award.


Eric Albrecht of The Columbus Dispatch was awarded Best of Show in the contest.


Eighty-four visual journalists from across the state submitted 887entries in the 59th annual news photography contest judged Friday and Saturday at the Akron Beacon Journal.


Judging the competition were: Matt McClain, Denver based freelance photographer and former Rocky Mountain News staff photographer, Andrew Craft, staff photographer at the Fayetteville (NC) Observer and Mark Mirko, photographer and photo editor at the Hartford Courant. Scott Stazzante, Chicago Tribune staff photographer, Tracy N. Boyer, former multimedia producer at Roanoke.com, Chuck Fadely, video producer at the Miami Herald, Zach Wise, online producer for the New York Times, judged multimedia and online entries remotely.


Marshall Gorby from the Springfield News-Sun was named Clip Photographer of the Year from points accumulated in the Association’s Monthly Clip Contest. Eric Albrecht from The Columbus Dispatch placed second and Chris Russell from The Columbus Dispatch won third place.
