Only Marshall Gorby from the Springfield News-Sun (the king of spot news) could shoot his buck before the gun season evens opens. Gorby has made a living racking up awards and points in clip contests with his spot news photos over the years. Somehow I think his latest effort will show up on the winners list for November. The deer attempting to ram a vehicle had earlier been ramming a house and was eventually Tasered by police and euthanized.

The odd part of the whole thing is its not the first time Gorby captured an image under these circumstances this year. In April he photographed a deer bouncing off a fence at some tennis courts. In this case the deer was herded out of the area to a nearby cemetery.
I know one thing – deer season opens next week in Ohio – I want this guy beside me while I’m in the woods.

Gorby and fellow staffer Barbara Perenic are the lone Ohio photographers who appear in the top ten standings of  NPPA’s Region 4 clip contest
Region 4 Standings
1st – Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis Star – 1198
2nd – David Stephenson/Lexington Herald Leader – 1076
3rd – Ryan Garza/The Flint Journal – 838
4th – Marshall Gorby/Springfield News-Sun – 734
5th – Charlie Nye/The Indianapolis Star – 618
6th – Barbara Perenic/Springfield News-Sun – 538
7th – Erik Holladay/The Jackson Citizen-Patriot – 514
8th – Erin McCracken/Evansville Courier & Press – 494
9th – Clayton Jackson/The Advocate Messenger – 478
10th – Denny Simmons/Evansville Courier & Press – 398
There is plenty of great work being produced elsewhere in the state, but I’m not sure how many Ohio shooters are participating in the contest these days. With NPPA dues at $110 and many employers no longer reimbursing photographers for their membership fees, the NPPA ranks have been thinning.
Until recently when the NPPA contest went online it was also virtually impossible to track results or standings so many photographers lost interest. While the NPPA site now provides that information its a bit clumsy. The results are broke down by category instead of region so you need to do a lot of clicking if all you’re really interested in are Region 4 results. Hopefully that will improve in time.
Those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones and we’ll take our lumps for not presenting clip winners in a timely manner the past few years. We hope this forum will address that issue. Links have been provided to galleries for winners from January through July. Simply click on the headline for that month’s results or the link found at the bottom of the post.
August winners should be posted in a day or two. September clips are coming in now and will be posted when all have been received.

Kudos to clip contest chairman Neal Lauron for keeping the contest running smoothly and making sure judges get their work done in a timely manner.
