A note: As promised, inspirations are all LOCAL, but I what I really want is to hear from you. Who are you, and what are you doing in the visual journalism space? My four-year-old can count the number of paid staff photographers working in the state of Ohio. In an industry that was once dominated by staff, the model has inverted and continues to tip. If you’re a freelance photojournalist in any shape or form, I’d really like to hear from you.

Show me what you do!

ONPA was formed in order to support and advocate for the working photojournalist, and student. In order to continue in that mission, we need to hear about you and the work you produce.

#NEWS:

Local

1/ Big congratulations to Dale Omori and Harlan Spector for their win at the 2022 Chagrin Documentary Film Festival in the Local Documentaries Category, for “American Heartbreak.” H/t to retired AP staffer Amy Sancetta for the early announcement on social media, as the festival was still going. You can read about the 91 films selected for the festival here.

2/ Ed Zirkle, ONPA Education Chairman 1974/75 reached out to me via email. He’s in the middle of some important work:

“I’m off to Ukraine next week. I’m a Rotarian and Army vet and photojournalist. What a combo … Going to document Rotary’s work helping refugees in Poland then to Ukraine to see what Rotarians are doing in Ukraine to help save/safe their country.

I’m also in the middle of documenting WWII veterans around the US for a project called Faces of Freedom. Just back from NM and spent time with 2 Navajo Code Talkers, then over to Pittsburgh for a lady that built B17’s and Vince who was at the Battle of the Bulge. I’ll end up with 60ish interviews/portraits.”

Thanks Ed for the introduction and information about your current work!

3a/ NEWSPAPER GUILD OF PITTSBURGH NEWSROOM WORKERS AUTHORIZE UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE STRIKE AGAINST PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE

3b/ More: Editorial support, here.

The owners of the Post-Gazette have also been notorious for dragging their feet in regards to coming to the negotiation table. In fact, The Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh is currently awaiting the results from a National Labor Relations Board hearing. NLRB Regional Director Nancy Wilson said in the complaint, filed in April, that Block Communications “bargained with no intention of reaching agreement” by “insisting upon proposals that are predictably unacceptable to the union.”

4/ THE Ohio State University is hiring.

“Director, Video and Photography, is a skilled visual storyteller overseeing the videography and photography for Ohio State Buckeyes and team social media accounts, website, athletics and business advancement special project requests and athletics studio.”

National

1/ The Sun-Times’ new chapter: Our digital content is now free for everyone

We’re dropping our paywall and making it free to read the news — but we’re still counting on your support.

2/ In continuation of the IG-related outrage, Andy Adams has moved to Substack because social media writ large doesn’t seem to be suiting him. Read about that here.

3/ The relief of missing out: Anticipated anxiety is a big reason why more people are avoiding the news

4/ Eastman Kodak is … HIRING!

5/ Bad winter coming for U.S. media companies

“The Washington Post is on track to lose money year this year and has lost subscriptions in the Biden era. The Atlantic is staring at another yearof roughly $10 million in losses. Other billionaire-backed publications, like The Los Angeles Times, are still struggling to find their footing in the digital era.”

6/ Melissa Lyttle has some great advice for those interested in participating in a photo workshop – of any kind.

“Don’t be an asshole. It’s a small profession and your reputation will likely precede you so make sure it’s a good one.”

#PEOPLE

4/ Columbus based freelancer and ONPA Treasurer Gaelen Morse covers a wide range of subject matter.

5/ If you’re a Guardians fan, October is/was/has been exciting! The walk off winning bat-flip in the second wild card game was particularly noteworthy. In response, ONPA Webmaster Bob DeMay posted an important historically contextual photograph in his IG feed. Bob is retired, but continues to inspire. Thanks for all your continued work with ONPA!

6/ With the NBA regular season around the corner, The Athletic chatted with Getty Images photographer Gregory Shamus about capturing the perfect photo.

Greg is based out of Detroit, but can be seen from time to time in Ohio.

“You don’t have to shoot an NBA game to make a great basketball image. It can be on a playground or in a high school gym. I photographed Chris Webber when he was in high school and made incredible images of him at the very beginning of his career. Great pictures are everywhere, not just in NBA arenas.”

7/ @Mizzou student Owen Ziliak is making some great pictures. The future is bright.

8/ Cleveland area freelancer David Liam Kyle made a picture on October 30, 1993 that has been selected by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 150 photos in college football history. David says, he “ … photographed Penn State All-American QB Kerry Collins as he ran out of the pocket in a cold, snowy game on October 30, 1993, against The Ohio State Buckeyes. Shot with manual lens, camera, and film.”

9/ Aaron Doster is a freelancer based out of Cincinnati, and he covers a lot of pro sports.
