Cincinnati Enquirer photojournalist Meg Vogel’s multimedia entry Raising Zay has been awarded second place for short form by the international jury of the 2016 World Press Photo Multimedia Contest.
Vogel’s entry explored a family’s journey with a transgender child. Zay Crawford felt trapped in a boy’s body at a young age. With puberty fast approaching, she got an implant that suppressed the puberty process. This is the story of one family’s journey to acceptance and understanding of their 12-year-old daughter.
Raising Zay was part of the Cincinnati Enquirer’s year-long “Transgender in Cincinnati” series. Winners in the contest received their awards in Amsterdam in The Netherland, Saturday, April 23.
This is the sixth year awards were presented by the organization for multimedia entries. Vogel is a graduate of Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication.
