The Ohio News Photographers Association presented it’s highest honor, the Robert S. Carson Award, to Ed Suba Jr. from the Akron Beacon Journal during the organization’s annual convention at Kent State University.
The award is given for outstanding contribution to photojournalism in Ohio. The award was created in memory of Robert S. Carson of Akron, an ONPA founder and camera repairman.
Suba, an eight term president of the organization, was recognized for his long service to ONPA as well as his dedication to teaching both in an out of the classroom. Suba is putting a bow on a 40 year career this week as he retires from the Beacon Journal, where he has worked since 1984.
Suba’s career began in Goshen Indiana after graduating from Bowling Green State University. There were stops along the way at The Painesville (OH) Telegram, The Tribune Chronicle in Warren and The Charleston Gazette.
While at the Beacon Journal Suba won three ONPA Photographer of the Year awards and is a four-time winner of the ONPA Ohio Understanding Award for in-depth photojournalism. Suba was ONPA Clip Photographer of the Year in 1994 and was NPPA Region 4 Photographer of the Year in 1995.
Former ONPA Chairman of the Board Bob DeMay coined the term ‘Subavision’ many years ago to describe Suba’s home theatre but the term was very often used to describe Suba’s unique style in making photographs.
Suba shared a 40 year retrospective on his career as part of the program. Twenty five members of Suba’s family were on hand for the surprise honor.
