Overall comments: Ohio, you don’t disappoint. Wow. Especially the feature and sports pictures, you all bring life to your cities through capturing these beautiful moments in your communities. You’ve inspired me, as I’m sure you do one another constantly through this wide breadth of high quality photojournalism in December — such a tough month to make images usually. Bravo, and keep up the great work in 2023.

Spot News
1st  – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Barn Fire”
2nd – Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Trauma”
3rd – Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Frozen”

Comments: The first place picture has a great composition to show the greater scene and put me in place from a unique vantage point. Second place captures hard, peak emotion in a trying breaking news situation. The third place picture is a great example of looking for what’s interesting and makes a breaking news scene visual. Great eye here looking for the frozen water on the tire, making a static image have more staying power.

General News
1st – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “PACT Act”
2nd – Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, “Missing Twins Vigil”
3rd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Bouncy Balls”

Comments: First place makes me feel. The emotion. The embrace. It’s a picture that will have readers stopping to understand the issue at hand. The second place photo also draws at the heartstrings with a solid, tender moment. Third place is a fun image and the stepped back approach allows us to see so, so many of the flying bouncy balls. Great choice to go wider here.

Feature
1st – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Santa’s Helper”
2nd – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Dancing Queen”
3rd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Kwanza”
HM – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Graduation”
HM – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Selfie”

Comments: This first place picture is exceptional, and the absolute favorite of the entire month’s contest entries. These two sisters sharing a on the couch in matching outfits evokes such joy as a viewer. The wider scene and seeing the framed photo and the room is appreciated here, and it’s simply a lovely photograph. Well done. The second place picture is a nice moment of a dancer, and the doorway with mothers watching on in the back helps fill this frame out. Third place is well shot. Clean and filled frame, and the moment is clear. Both honorable mention photos share fun, fleating moments in their peak. Well done all around. These feature photos make me want to get out and roam the streets for features myself.

Sports Action
1st  – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “interception”
2nd – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Lost Helmet”
3rd – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Hockey Shot”
HM – Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Touchdown”

Comments: First place is peak action, mid-air and so clean. Crisp and beautifully captured. Second place, similar to first, is clean and peak as well. The helmet flying off makes this image more exceptional. Third place, the hockey photo is nice. A determined player taking his shot, and nice to see the puck mid-shot as well. The honorable mention is just a classic sideline picture diving to the pylon. A lower angle would have helped elevate this, as seeing the players face would make it a more powerful sports action photo. Still, props are deserved for the moment captured.

Sports Feature
1st – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Upset”
2nd – Erik Schelkun, Elsestar Images, “Red Scare”
3rd – Erik Schelkun, Elsestar Images, “Team Energy”
HM – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Pep Rally”
HM – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “And One”

Comments: First place has fantastic emotion, composition and color. Any paper would be proud to play this as a centerpiece picture. Very well seen. Second place, nice work getting in and under the flag to provide a unique view. Third place is just a well-captured moment, clean and beautiful. The first honorable mention silhouette is clean with separation against a night’s sky and nice to see an atmospheric photograph shot with such care. This puts me there alongside the fandemonium. Nice work. The final honorable mention photo is like third place, but not as strong. Still wanted to commend the photographer on nice emotion in this one.

Portrait
1st – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “Antiques”
2nd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Ballet”
3rd – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “Soccer Player of the Year”
HM – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Coach”

Comments: First place is a well-lit portrait that gives a good sense of Luke Ernst through the antiques he gathers throughout the picture. Second place feels like it could be a feature as well, but it is clean and works well as a portrait of these ballet dancers. The lighting makes this third place photo rise above. The choice of using the lower third composition for the soccer player works well as a frame as well with a nice backdrop of the school. The honorable mention is a nice scene, and works well for all the seam reasons as third place. It was a close call between each fighting for third place.

Story/Essay
1st – J.D. Pooley, Sentinel-Tribune , “Schoolhouse”
2nd – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Vestments”

Comments: The schoolhouse story was well shot with a good amount of visual variety on an interesting topic. The details and variety helped move us from picture to picture. The second place story had some nice images, but lacks time spent to really elevate this as a story. Feels more like a picture package for a centerpiece, but still the photojournalist did a good job seeking variety in that attempt.

Illustration
1st – Phillip L. Kaplan, The Blade, “Espresso”
2nd – Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, “Octopus”
3rd – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Pancakes”

Comments: Yep, now I’m hungry. The first place picture does an excellent job using light and shadows to fill the frame and make an inviting, clean picture of espresso to keep my eye bouncing with delight. Second place does a great job of filling the frame as well, and providing a direct picture without distraction, making this octopus plate appetizing to the viewer. The pancakes in third place are well stacked and, not to sound like a broken record, is also clean with a unique vantage point to provide something new and fresh for designers.

3rd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Father”
HM -Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Timid”

2nd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Rymers Cemetery”
3rd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Michael Jackson”
HM – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Tiny Dancer”
HM – Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Wrinkles”

Judge’s comments: Nice moment in the first-place photo. Second-place is a poetic photo. Overall, we would like to see more poetry and intentional visual language in the photography in all of the categories.

Sports Action
1st – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Header”
2nd – Erik Schelkun, Elsestar Images, “Charged”
3rd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Contest”
HM – Erik Schelkun, Elsestar Images, “Toppled”
HM – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Jumble”

Judge’s comments:  Lots of fine action photos here. We liked first place because of the peak action and expressions. Advice: When shooting sports on the field, get the lowest angle possible to accentuate the action. Do this and watch how it cleans up backgrounds and makes players more dynamic. Rebecca Benson does this well in the later picture story/essay category.

Sports Feature
1st – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Semi-final Loss”
2nd -Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Snowflake”
3rd – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “State Champs”
HM – Erik Schelkun, Elsestar Images, “Red Scare”
HM – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Victory Kiss”

Judge’s comments:  The strongest category. Lots of strong photos here. We loved the dejection in the first- place photo. Second place was a nice find. The emotion in third place is excellent.

Portrait
1st – Phillip L. Kaplan, The Blade, “Dog Watcher”
2nd – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “Veteran”
3rd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Connor Walendzak”
HM – Jeremy Wadswoth, The Blade, “JudyTrautman”
HM – Andrew Dolph, The Times-Reporter, “SaveWDNP”

Judge’s comments:
First place was a refreshing portrait.

Story/Essay
1st  – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Prison Graduation”
2nd – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “OSU Michigan”
3rd – Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, “This Is Trans”

Judge’s comments: First place stood out because of the moments and tight edit. Second and third have some strong photos but need a more thoughtful edit. We liked the action and fan reaction in the Michigan-OSU essay. We did not award HM for the fourth entry. The edit was way too loose and repetitive.

Spot News
1st  – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Derailment”
2nd – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Fire”
3rd – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Smoke Plume”

Judge’s comments:  There were not many entries in this category, and there was a picture story/essay that had some strong images that were not included as singles for this category. First place immediately rose to the top because it was a different perspective. I liked the lines moving down into view and the sunset. Second and third were nice captures of billowing smokes and flames. I chose second and third only because of the unnatural, long crop on the third place image.

General News
1st – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Accidental Shooting”
2nd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Salute”
3rd – J.D. Pooley, Sentinel-Tribune , “Luderman”

Judge’s comments:  First place’s body language stood out to me right away, even without seeing faces. The gestures and the orange suit made it easy to read and react to. Second place is a really nice subtle moment. Kudos to the photographer for catching it! Third place is clean and easy to read, but not as jarring as the first two images.

Feature
1st – Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Crown”
2nd – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Halloween”
3rd -Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Trick or Treat”

Judge’s comments:  First place stood out to me immediately because of the funny, impromptu moment. I wish the background was cleaner, but the tight crop helps alleviate the clutter. Second place is a fun fall moment. The colors work. Third place impressed me with the perfect profile silhouette, the little details and opposing colors. It’s easy to rely on silhouettes, but this was is especially well composed and thought out.

Sports Action
1st – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “Blocked Kick”
2nd – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Chubb Hurdle”
3rd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Header”
HM – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Facemask”

Judge’s comments:  The blocked kick stood out quickly. It is really tough to capture these! The photographer nailed it and did so cleanly. My one gripe is to crop the bottom right ankle out. The Chubb hurdle is also fantastic. I really liked the little residue flying off him. I picked it as second place only because first place has a cleaner background. Third place is also great! The matching, braided ponytails and the perfectly placed ball is what did it for me. I think the first and second rose above it only because they are not as usual. Honorable mention goes to the turned face mask. Ouch. Not as impactful as the others but it still deserves kudos. Great job with this category this month!!

Sports Feature
1st – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Confetti”
2nd – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “District Win”
3rd – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “Celebration”

Judge’s comments:  First place is great. I love the black and white, the flash light, the varying faces. It’s nicely composed. Second place is so close to being perfect. The varying faces are also fantastic, but the framing isn’t as nicely composed as first place. Third place of the fans and player tells a story, but isn’t as graphic as the other two.

Portrait
1st – Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, “Chef Connolly”
2nd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Kengo Kato”
3rd – Isaac Ritchey, Sentinel-Tribune , “Neighbor”

Judge’s comments:  Chef is first place because of the clean, easy to read framing. I really loved the warmth in the wine glasses. Second place is a great use of harsh light. Kudos for trying to wrangle the harshness with the white outfit. Third place is a moving way to show emotion of a spot news scene.

Story/Essay
1st  – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Chaos”
2nd – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Fire”

Judge’s comments:  I wish there were more entries, but these two deserve nods. The first one especially did a nice job of following a usual football game through terrifying chaos. I really liked the blanket detail photo in the series. The second place fire series did a great job of capturing smoke, flames and water in interesting light conditions. There was plenty of variety with those elements, but it lacked human connection.

Spot News
1
st Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Apartment Fire”
2nd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Dog Rescue”
3rd – Andrew Dolph, Akron Beacon Journal, “Plane Crash”
HM – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Apartment Fire”

Judge’s comments: What set the winning images apart in this category was solid moments. There were several nice scene-setting types of images that did a good job of reporting spot news, but images that did that but also portrayed moments rose to the top. The winning image of the woman crying at the apartment fire has it all: Sense of place, foreground and background action, and moments in both that help tell the story of the tragic event as it happens truly in the moment. Kudos for having the courage to get her name during such a rough event, too.

Second place didn’t have the sense of place background that first place had, but the moment of the dog being carried out evoked a genuine emotion from me and made it stick in my head (good way to show one of the real things that can be lost from fires).

Third place didn’t really have a strong moment, but the “what the heck is happening here?” factor from the image really made it stand out. The background is pretty clean for a spot news image, and the police officer does give a nice human element to make the image rise. Second and third places were a close call for me. The first honorable mention (woman fleeing) has a great, real moment, but the rough image quality and lack of a name on the woman (understandable, considering the nature) kept it from rising higher. The second honorable mention (aerial of apartment fire) does a nice job of showing the full scene of the apartment fire – It would be a lovely secondary or inside image. Not really a standout moment or composition in this image, but there’s still work being done on the scene and kudos for thinking of getting in the air.

General News
1
st Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Drag Show”
2nd – Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, “Doo Dah Parade”
3rd – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “New Fire Engine”
HM – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Jayland Protest”
HM – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Police Station Protest”
HM – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Priest”

Judge’s comments: The images that placed first and second were neck-in-neck. Both have a solid action happening in the foreground, with a nice contributing background to make for a complete standalone image. The drag show rose above the parade just slighty because there was just a little bit more happening throughout the frame – The woman on the right with the dollar-bill tip shows more of investment (no pun intended) in the action happening and helps reinforcement the foreground action, and the “Toledo Loves Love” gives the image a sense of place that just seals the deal on a great general news image. The parade had similar good qualities, but it just didn’t all come together quite like the drag show image.

The new fire engine in third place has a lovely moment that helped it shine through the somewhat messy composition (understandable considering the nature of the assignment). The collective moment of community members and first responders pushing the fire truck into the station made for a heartwarming general news image. Neat tradition!

The first honorable mention image (Jayland Protest shirt) did a nice job of showing a sadly all-too- regular news situation in a fresh way – I’ve seen such shirts at protests, and the juxtaposition of the shirt and police officers does a nice job of telling an all-too-frequent story in a fresh way. The second honorable mention (Police Station Protest, protesters reflected in police station window) has perhaps the nicest composition of all the images, but sadly the focus just wasn’t sharp enough to make it really sing and a lack of a name also drug it down a little. Keep on seeing in neat ways like this! The final honorable mention (Priest, two men crying) shows a lovely moment – Pretty standard in general, but a good moment.

Feature
1st Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Bath Time”
2nd – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Tractor Day”
3rd – Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, “State Fair Sunset”
HM – Stephen Zenner, The Blade, “Generations”
HM – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Race”

Judge’s comments: The first-place image (the pig and girl) had the nicest moment of the bunch. Even though I know that pig isn’t actually in on the moment, the shared expression from the girl and pig really made this a solid feature. Image quality is a little rough and composition could be a bit stronger, but the bones of this image are excellent. The second-place image (kids on the tractor) is a clean image with fun interactions, which made it an easy read. Great use of a long lens, and a nice slice of life! The third-place image (downtown sunset) took a lovely graphic approach to the feature category, and that made it stand out with color and composition. Well done waiting for the right silhouette to cross your path and complete this image! Perhaps cropping down from the top would make this image cleaner, but I do love the purples of the sky in the top of the image.

The first honorable mention (Generations, old hands with cane) had lovely humor (the waiting hands juxtaposed with the single star illuminated on the backside of the child on the right) which showed some nice thinking/seeing on the part of the photographer. Usually this tight of an image would be tough to work as a feature for me, but well done telling a unique story in such tight confines. The second honorable mention (man pushing kid in red cart) is just a solid slice of life. People feel slightly camera aware which leads to a somewhat lacking moment, but the overall scene and intention of the people and the image resonated with me (That’s an A+ effort from Dad!).

Sports Action
1st Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Derby”
2nd – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Bunker Shot”
3rd – Sam Greene, The Cincinnati Enquirer, “Out”

Judge’s comments: The first-place image (flag with racers) stood out from the start. It may not be the strongest (peak action), but it is indeed action and it is framed expertly. Well done pulling back to show a great sense of place along with some action!

The second-place image (golf bunker shot) is a classic, solid sports action image – Tightish crop, great peak action and a face. All’s looking great here!

The third-place image (baseball catch) is solid – The tongue made it stand above other sports action images. Image quality could be a little bit better (the outfield is quite a ways away), but otherwise another classic sports action image.

Sports Feature
1
st – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Walk-off”
2nd – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Dust Storm”
3rd – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Walk-off”

Judge’s comments: The first-place image (baseball walkoff from above) simply had best combination of a clean composition and a fun moment. Wish we could see the person being doused’s face, but I know that’s a tough get in this scene.

The second-place image (baseball dust storm) was an off-hand moment I haven’t seen often which made it intriguing. The clean composition helped this quiet moment rise to place.

The third-place image (baseball walkoff from the dugout) has a nice moment, but the lack of faces kept it from rising higher. Also, the camera guy on the left really detracts from the image (but that’s just how it works with in-house video folks sometimes, eh? That exact thing has happened to me too, so I very much feel your pain)

Portrait
1
st – Stephen Zenner, The Blade, “Vladislav”
2nd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Jake Gust”
3rd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Ragtime”

Judge’s comments: The first-place image (boy with plastic tub over his head) immediately stood out to me, and made me want to know more. It gives a sense of mystery and uncertainty, and it also has a nice clean composition and looseness that allows my eyes to travel around the scene. Nicely done!

The second-place image does a great job of utilizing off-camera flash, and the framing of sunflowers in the foreground makes the portrait a more immersive image. I’d like to see a little more of the tractor, but otherwise, solid portrait!

The third-place image has a nice feel to it, and gives me a sense of the subject’s character. I wish there was a little more to the image (maybe his instrument or something else to tell a deeper story), but it’s a colorfully and cleanly executed portrait.

Story/Essay
1
st – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Jayland Protest”
2nd – Stephen Zenner, The Blade, “Borodianka”
3rd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Jayland”

Judge’s comments: The first-place story (Jayland Protests) had both the easiest-to-follow narrative and biggest number of strong standalone images of the bunch (images like 01, 03, 06, 07, and 08 all were strong). You could perhaps cut an image or two and have the same or a better result (isn’t that almost always the case with photo stories/essays?) – perhaps 04 or 09 (maybe 02 too, but it’s a nice tight shot to add different focal lengths/head sizes to the overall story). Overall, great work!

The second-place story (Ukraine) does a good job of trying to encapsulate so much into a photo story. There is a nice progression of images, but the narrative gets a bit lost for me. I understand this is a spotlight on a family or two’s struggle in Ukraine (thus, giving it the local angle) but I wish there was more – More of an overall view of the situation, more of the country’s general efforts to put itself back together/fight Russia, and even more intimate personal moments with the family. However, solid work of gathering these images in a literal warzone!

The third-place story (Jayland) is also a good take on the aftermath of the shooting, but lacks some of the great standalone images that the winning photo story features. However, image 05 was a nice quiet moment that stood out to me in this collection of photos – It would’ve done well in the general news category! Good job overall.

2nd – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “Air Guitar”
3rd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Sad Senior”

Judge’s comments:  Lots of great emotion and seeing in this category.

Portrait
1st – Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, “LGBTQ Asylum Seeker”
2nd – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Rocket Man”
3rd – Stephen Zenner, The Blade, “The Goray Family”

Story/Essay
1st – Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, “Memorial Tournament”
2nd – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “Korean Vet “
3rd – Stephen Zenner, The Blade, “Katiuzhanka Occupation”

Judge’s comments:  This was a challenging category to judge because there were so many different types of entries. Almost every entry includes really strong images, but most of the stories could have used tighter edits. We did see several images within story entries that would have done well in single categories. We were ultimately drawn to the golf tournament because of its intentionality — the variety among the images showcases the perspective and skill of the photojournalist. Overall, the series presents comprehensive coverage of the tournament while maintaining a cohesive narrative. The story on the Korean War veteran’s remains being returned to their family included really powerful and moving images, but could have benefited from a tighter edit.

Spot News
1st – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Fire”
2nd – Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Fatal Accident”
3rd – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Rural Roll Over”

Judge’s comments: First place was a nice timed moment from a structure fire; humorous and unexpected, remaining on the periphery can sometimes pay off.
Second place of reaction from a vehicle fatality was clean, adding the trooper gave it a sense of urgency, otherwise it doesn’t work.Third place, a vehicle accident, was a little busy, but still a nice moment from the driver, at left.

General News

1st – Isaac Rithcey, The Blade, “Graduation”
2nd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Naturalization”
3rd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Voting”

Judge’s comments: Fun and small category. First place, obvious choice, nice reaction from the fire academy graduate. Second place, another great reaction, this time from a naturalization ceremony, but without a telling sense of place/activity. Third place from election day, a nice moment from a day that can be like pulling teeth to get a different voting photo.

Feature

1st – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Bite Training”
2nd – Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, “Graduation”
3rd – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Hand Car”

Judge’s comments: Well, the first place photo could have placed in either General or Feature category, but the timing was perfect with the dog leaping out of the widow. Obvious choice for first. Second place of the graduate had a nice quality to it, soft, even light, great smile and no visual background/foreground distractions. Third place was a tough between a few others but the faces make the image with a rule of thirds giving this entry a nice composition.

Sports Action
1st – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Fall”
2nd – Scott Heckel, The Canton Repository, “Sliding Catch”
3rd – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Out at Home”
HM – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “Blind Throw”

Judge’s comments: Top two were both very well done, but first place came down to the impending doom the girl faced as she trips over a hurdle, good faces, tough to make images of track that are unusual. This fits that bill. Second of a softball game is well timed, and another strong action moment with a telltale outcome. Third place from baseball action; how many times have any of us waited for a good home plate play? HM goes to a player with his hat falling off which only happens when you’re not focusing on the player. Good get.

Sports Feature

1st – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Victory”
2nd – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Celebration”
3rd – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Swimming”
HM – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Double Celebration”

Judge’s comments: First place, nice clean moment, good faces. Nice picture. Second, another nice moment with the player on the right giving it the needed boost to second place. Always good when a single image tells the story. Third was a humorous photo, which I went back and forth on between the honorable mention image. Ultimately it came down to the body language of the players. HM was also a nice get with great lighting. Overall, strongest category of the contest.

Portrait

1st – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Kurt Krahnke”
2nd – J.D. Pooley, Sentinel-Tribune , “Music Teacher”
3rd – Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, “Gerry Hammond”

Judge’s comments: Very small category. The winner was an obvious choice. All three places had clean backgrounds and good lighting. Busy backgrounds, unless adding a significant sense of place with out visual noise, tend to bring down the image to a point.

Story/Essay

1st – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Desire”
2nd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Naturalization”
3rd – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Mother’s Day March”

Judge’s comments: First place from a funeral for a baby killed in a drive-by shooting was well done. Good access, and looks to be a very emotional scene for all involved. However, the project needed tighter editing as an entry. More is not always better. Second place from a Naturalization ceremony was nicely done, but again, a tighter edit is needed. Third place was from a women’s march that could have also used cleaner editing. Small category and any take away is to edit as cleanly as possible. Redundancy will hurt. Each image should tell a story that serves the purpose of telling the overall story.

Spot News
1st
– Isaac Ritchey / The Blade, “Apartment Fire”
2nd – Stephen Zenner / The Blade, “Desire Hughes”
3rd – Rebecca Benson / The Blade, “Car Wash Fire”
HM – Kurt Steiss / The Blade, “Fire”

Judge’s comments: The first place image is visually captivating because it has an interesting juxtaposition that draws you in. We liked the strong emotion in the vigil photos but had a hard time deciding if this was the right category. In the car wash fire photo, the photographer captured something visually interesting at a routine spot news event.

General News
1st – Jeremy Wadsworth / The Blade, “New Roof”
2nd – Barbara J. Perenic / The Columbus Dispatch, “Verdict”
3rd – J.D. Pooley / Sentinel-Tribune , “Science Class”
HM – Isaac Ritchey / The Blade, “Rally”
HM – Barbara J. Perenic / The Columbus Dispatch, “Easter Service”

Judge’s comments: This was a pretty strong category overall. The first place image was immediately our favorite. The photographer brings everything together in this image with the expression, composition, layers, etc… a true decisive moment. The second place image is really powerful and has many layers of expression and emotion, but the caption was a little confusing. The third place image is a nice moment. We appreciate the photographer catching this kind of reaction from a politician. The photographer’s creative approach to the Trump rally was refreshing. The light and airy feel to the baptism image really supports the emotion.

Feature
1st – Isaac Ritchey / The Blade, “Applesauce”
2nd – Kurt Steiss / The Blade, “Fishing”
3rd – Bill Lackey / Springfield News-Sun, “Umbrella”
HM – Lizzie Heintz / The Blade, “Robo Stress”
HM – Isaac Ritchey / The Blade, “Twins”

Judge’s comments: The first image is a wonderful moment with a great composition that leads your eye to the heart of the photo. The second image is just a beautiful scene with no flaws. The third image was well planned out and executed. The robotics photo has a lot going for it but a better angle might elevate the impact of the emotion. The twin photo is a sweet moment.

Sports Action
1st –
Scott Heckel / The Canton Repository, “Hoover Lake”
2nd – Rebecca Benson / The Blade, “Fall”
3rd – Lizzie Heintz / The Blade, “Face First”
HM – Kurt Steiss / The Blade, “Caught Stealing”
HM – Adam Cairns / The Columbus Dispatch, “Artistic Swimming”

Judge’s comments: Ouch! Nice eye, literally. Well-timed, clean and strong lacrosse photo that causes a reaction. The hockey frame is really unique with a great perspective that becomes more interesting the longer you look at it. The baseball photo has great action with an awesome, tight crop. The last two photos are visually appealing. The swimming photo could use a tighter crop.

Sports Feature
1st
– Jeremy Wadsworth / The Blade, “Hockey Fan”
2nd – Andrew Dolph / The Times Reporter, “Grip”
3rd – Rebecca Benson / The Blade, “Fish”
HM – Andrew Dolph / The Times Reporter, “Winning Run”
HM – Adam Cairns / The Columbus Dispatch, “Goal Celebration”

Judge’s comments: We chose the first place image because the different lighting and the squished nose made for a fun photo. The second place photo was a nice a take on pole vaulting. The third place image has great facial expressions.

Portrait
1st
– Jeremy Wadsworth / The Blade, “Matt Markoff”
2nd – Shane Flanigan / ThisWeek Community News, “Nuvo Church”
3rd – Lizzie Heintz / The Blade, “Tom Wardell”
HM – Barbara J. Perenic / The Columbus Dispatch, “Painted”

Judge’s comments: The first place image uses a combination of great light and a clear connection with the artist to make a dynamic portrait. The second place image is very simple but effective.

Story/Essay
1st – Barbara Perenic Barbara J. Perenic / The Columbus Dispatch, “Body Painter”
2nd – Stephen Zenner / The Blade, “Lauren Cervetto”
3rd – Adam Cairns / The Columbus Dispatch, “The Masters”
HM – Jeremy Wadsworth / The Blade, “Naturalization”

Judge’s comments: The body paint story is gorgeous. The photographer had a very elegant approach to this story. It’s nice to see such a variety in something that could look redundant. The photo story on Lauren is very intimate and leads the viewer to empathize with her. Both of these stories have excellent captions that enhance each story. The series from the Masters was well-executed with a lot of variety. The naturalization ceremony had good documentation of the event.

2nd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Dog Rescue”
3rd – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Dog Rescued From Fire”

Judge’s comments: This category was dominated by pet rescues. Not surprisingly, this category was weak as  newspapers just don’t chase spot news the way they used to. The top three were all solid photos.

General News
1st – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Citizen”
2nd – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Heartbreak”
3rd – Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Hugs”
HM – Bill Lackey, Springfield News-Sun, “Wind Tunnel”

Judge’s comments: Emotion ruled this category. The faces in the first place photo brought it to the top.

3rd – Erik Schelkun, Elsestar Images, “Bike Park”
HM – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Brock the Clown”
HM – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Holi”

Judge’s comments: A solid group of photos. The excellent composition elevated the nature walk photo to first place. Second is full of joy, while the photographer showed great timing in the third place photo.

Sports Action

2nd – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Eye Poke”
3rd – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “Stow Outfielders”
HM – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Fight”
HM – Andrew Dolph, The Times Reporter, “Out at Third”

Judge’s comments: We like the action, and quick read of first place. Second place hurts to look at and third is a nice outfield shot, only hampered by the out-of-focus player.

Sports Feature
1st – Isaac Ritchey, The Blade, “Soaked”
2nd – Jeff Lange, Akron Beacon Journal, “State Champs”
3rd – Kareem Elgazzar, The Cincinnati Enquirer, “Semifinal Loss”
HM – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Victory”
HM – Kareem Elgazzar, The Cincinnati Enquirer, “Visiting Team”

Judge’s comments: Great photos in this category. First place might be the best photo of the month. This is exactly the picture you hope to make when you go in a locker room. We love the faces in second and third is solid dejection.

Portrait

1st – Kurt Steiss, The Blade, “Holi Smile”
2nd – Lizzie Heintz, The Blade, “Regency”
3rd – Sam Greene, The Cincinnati Enquirer, “Rico”

Judge’s comments: A small category. The top three were all solid photos.

Story/Essay
1st –  Rebecca Benson, The Blade, “Spelling Bee”
2nd – Isaac Ritchey, The  Blade, “Hockey”
3rd – Shane Flanigan, ThisWeek Community News, “State Champs”

Judge’s comments: The quiet moments that captured the tension in the spelling bee entry elevated it to first. Second and third place were nice takes on state championships with second having a tighter edit.

Illustration
1st – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Grilled Cheese”
2nd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Chimichanga”
3rd – Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, “Casserole”

Judge’s comments: Only three entries made this category easy to judge. The grilled cheese had better lighting than the other two.

Spot News
1st – Andrew Dolph / The Times Reporter, “Schoenbrunn  Car Fire”
2nd – Andrew Dolph / The Times Reporter, “Fatal Fire”
3rd – Bill Lackey / Springfield News-Sun, “Fire”

Comments: The common theme was the incident, not the quality of the photo. Photos should come first, not the magnitude of the story; for instance, the image of someone documenting evidence on the scene of a shooting – had the car window not had bullet holes in it, there would have been nothing compelling about the photo. It’s an image of a guy looking at things on the street in front of a car.

3rd – Jeff Lange / Akron Beacon Journal, “Rapist Notes”

ONPA Monthly Still Clip Contest Rules

The ONPA monthly clip contest is now entered and judged online. Photos entered into the contest must have been published either in print, or online, on your school or newspaper’s website.

Entry preparation: Make sure all photos are cropped to 10 inches on the longest side at 200 dpi with a .jpg extension. Files should be approximately 1-2 megabytes in size.

File names must start with a two digit category code to designate the category – (01-07), followed by an underscore to give a name of the photo, followed by an underscore, and then the photographer’s three initials. For example: A sports action photo by John J. Smith should read: 04_fumble_jjs.jpg.

A picture story by John J. Smith would be named 07_kids01_jjs.jpg, 07_kids02_jjs.jpg, son and and so forth for stories containing multiple images.

Caption requirements: All photos must contain the original caption in the description or caption field using Photoshop or Photo Mechanic. Your byline should be entered in the author or photographer field. Your publication name or school attended (for student entries) should be entered in the credit field. The publication date is to be placed in the keywords field. Entries without proper content in each of these four fields will be considered incomplete and withdrawn from the contest. Photographers must remove their name and publication from the caption/description field since judges will be able to read this field while judging. That content is to be placed in the author and credit field.

Uploading: To upload files, use the uploader widget on the Clip Contest page on the ONPA website.

Entries will be accepted from the first of the month following publication through midnight on the 15th. After this deadline, the system will be closed until the first of the next month and no further entries will be accepted. Using the online upload tool, multiples can be submitted at one time without zipping by pressing shift or command and clicking on all the files you wish to enter for the month.

Entry Limits: Photographers are limited to nine entries per month. Should a photographer upload more than nine entries, all entries after the first nine will be disregarded. A story counts as one entry. All photos without a proper file name will be disregarded. Once a file is uploaded, it cannot be modified or removed. (Should you have an issue, please reach out to the clip chairs.)
