ONPA judging and seminar March 29-31 at OU

The ONPA still contest judging and seminar will return to Ohio Universty in Athens, March 29-31. Officers are currently finalizing details for judges, vendors and hotel accomadtions for the 68th version of the ONPA convention.

Since we are talking about judging it is preparation time and rules and entry forms for the contests and Larry Fullerton Photojournalism Scholarship are now available for download.

The deadline for the still and online contest is February 24. The television deadline is February 28 and Fullerton Scholarship entries must be received by March 1.

Former ONPA Treasurer Thomas Brunk dies at 86

Longtime ONPA Treasurer Tom Brunk passed away March 1, at Stewart F. Meyer Hospice House, Palm Coast, Florida at age 86. Brunk was ONPA treasurer from 1969 to 1991.

Brunk was ONPA treasurer from 1969 to 1991. Brunk was director of photography for Nationwide Insurance in Columbus for 34 years. Prior to that he was chief photographer for the Lima Citizen.

Brunk was presented the Robert S. Carson Award by ONPA in 1977 for outstanding contribution to photojournalism in Ohio.

Jessica Phelps wins POYi Photographer of the Year

Once again Jessica Phelps of the Newark Advocate is atop the photojournalism world after being selected as Pictures of the Year Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the 76th annual POYi competition.

Phelps also won first place for Daily Life Picture Story in the contest.

Kyle Robertson

Kyle Robertson wins fifth ONPA clip contest title

Kyle Robertson from The Columbus Dispatch has won his fifth ONPA Clip Photographer of the Year title joining Jim Witmer as the only photographers to do so.

Robertson’s title is his fourth consecutive and he is the first to accomplish that distinction.

General News - 1st place - Outside the Lane Aviation hangars, Connie McKinney checks on her three-year-old son, Bryce McKinney, as he is unloaded from an ambulance and placed onto a MedFlight plane heading to Van Nuys Airport in California. Bryce has been at Nationwide Children's Hospital for the past two years receiving treatment for bronchopulmonary dysphasia. He will receive treatment at Children's Hospital Los Angeles for a few more weeks before heading home to Glendale, California.
General News - 2nd place - Terror suspect Vincent Armstrong is led out of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio in Toledo following a hearing. Armstrong is the boyfriend of Elizabeth Lecron, and has been linked to Lecron’s alleged planned attack on a Toledo bar. He was charged with providing false information to law enforcement. Officials allege he denied discussing plans to launch an attack with Lecron and denied purchasing items that could be used to make a bomb.
General News - 3rd place - Judge Andy Douglas presents incoming Common Pleas Court Judge Joe McNamara a Magic 8 Ball to aid in his decision making during a swearing-in ceremony at One Government Center in Toledo.

Portrait - 1st place - Zach Harrison is one of the highest recruited player in the the last 20 years from Central Ohio. Ohio State along with Michigan and Penn State are the final three schools that Zach will pick on signing day on December 19.

The Bearcats took home the Military Bowl trophy and complete the team's third-ever 11-win season.

Story - 1st place - Zach Harrison is the No. 4 overall recruit and the top strong-side defensive end prospect in the country. Harrison is also the highest-rated recruit ever from Columbus and third-highest-rated from Ohio. Zach narrowed his list of finalists to Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State before the start of the season.
