Parker says his mom has had addictions for years, first to crack cocaine, then heroin. “She’s been in and out of my life my whole life,” he says. “She first left when I was 3 or 4, maybe even sooner.” He only remembers "bits and pieces" of it. Parker has bounced around between his mother and grandparents, living in three homes in the last six months. As many as 30 percent to 60 percent of the children of parents who have addiction disorders might have their own substance-use disorder at some point, experts say.
