Meg Vogel from The Cincinnati Enquirer and Jessica Phelps from the Newark Advocate have been chosen Ohio News Photographers of the Year for 2018 by the Ohio News Photographers Association. This is the fifth straight year that Phelps has won the small market POY title. This is the fifth straight year that Phelps has won the small market POY title. To put Phelps’ fifth consecutive title in perspective only three photographers have won consecutive POY titles and  all were two-time winners of the award. Vogel won previously for her work in 2016.

Finishing second in large market division was Kyle Robertson from The Columbus Dispatch and finishing second in the small market division was Lorrie Cecil from ThisWeek Newpapers.

Two student members had a very rewarding weekend. Liz Moughon from Ohio University won Best of Show for the second consecutive year for her feature picture story, “Finding Kyle.” Moughon was also named the very first ONPA Multimedia Photographer of the Year and placed second as Student Photographer of the Year.

Nathaniel Bailey from Kent State University won the Chuck Scott Student Photographer of the Year title and was awarded the Larry Fullerton Photojournalism Scholarship.

The James R. Gordon Ohio Understanding Award was awarded Joshua A. Bickel from The Columbus Dispatch
for his entry “Wanted: Ohio’s Overflowing Warrant System.”

Forty-five visual journalists from across the state submitted over 650 entries in the 68th annual news photography contest judged at Ohio University.

Judging the competition were: by Robert Scheer from the Indianapolis Star, Denny Simmons from the Evansville Courier & Press and and Getty Images sports photojournalist Maddie Meyer. Judging multimedia and online entries remotely wereAAron Ontiveroz, a photojournalist at The Denver Post, and Katie Wood, a San Francisco-based freelance video producer and former video producer at SFGate.com and The Denver Post.
