The 1,400 acre landfill has been in operation for 26 years and is expected to last another 80 years at the present rate of 600-700 tons of garbage a day. Although roughly 75% of landfill materials can be recycled, Nye doubts that this will make a difference in most people’s disposal habits. “Unless they make it mandatory, nobody is going to recycle,” said Nye.

Shiells is a 24-year-old Scotsman from Edinburgh, Scotland who commutes to Belhaven Beach to instruct students of all ages how to surf. Shiells works in association with the Dubar based surf school, Coast to Coast.
