In the West, hope for fire safety may rise due to President Bush’s commitment to the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of Dec. 3, 2003. Decades of forest growth at the Las Vegas watershed have set the stage for a wildfire that would destroy almost all of the city’s water supply.While Las Vegas is depending on its watershed for over 92 percent of its water, the health of the watershed is a growing concern. Part of the Gallinas Watershed is currently being thinned to perscription. The project will take more than 10 years to complete.

Ron said his grandfather instilled in him visions of holistic management of the forest. The Ortegas treat the forest by removing firewood, poll timber and saw logs. "It is an overwhelming and monumental task," Ortega said, " so overwhelming that you dont know where to start."
