We’re having a convention!

Come for the education, stay for the camaraderie

Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist and Los Angeles Times correspondent, Marcus Yam, will discuss his experiences in what led him to pursue photojournalism from his early educational years in aerospace engineering, and lessons learned around the world as a journalist working domestically and abroad. He will present work illustrating those experiences along the way.

A catered-lunch will be provided for all.

We will then transition into a panel discussion with Marcus, Cara Owesly, Director of Photography at the Cincinnati Enquirer, and Angelo Merendino, Cleveland-based commercial and editorial photographer, about the state of the industry. Audience questions will be throughout the discussion.

The mid-afternoon and evening will feature portfolio reviews from speakers and other guest reviewers as needed, as well as technical demonstrations from the Midwest Photo staff. Signup for reviews will be available on the day of the conference. Please keep in mind that the camera store will also be open for business during our conference.

• Attendance is free, but limited to 100 people, so registration is required via our EventBrite page, here.
• Please join us after 7pm at Ohio Brewing Company, 421 E 2nd Ave, Columbus, OH 43201, for continued reviews, and social time. Our own private room with its own bar and server has been secured. Food & drinks are on your own, though.
• If you plan to stay overnight, we will be at the Hilton Garden Inn, 3232 Olentangy River Rd., Columbus OH, 43202. Please us the code “OHNP” – yes, ONPA was not available. So, it’s OHNP for the group rate.

9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Introduction from ONPA Board, followed by keynote presentation by Pulitzer Prize winning LA Times staff photographer and foreign correspondent, Marcus Yam

 12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. – Catered lunch and membership meeting

 1:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Break

 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Panel discussion with Marcus Yam, LA Times staff photographer and foreign correspondent; Cara Owsley, Director of Photography at The Cincinnati Enquirer, Angelo Merendino, Cleveland-based freelance photographer

3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Break

4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Presentation of contest awards, Fullerton Scholarship and Carson Award

4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. – Portfolio reviews – see signup sheets posted in “The Learning Center”

6:30 p.m. – Clean up

6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. – Social time at Ohio Brewing Company, for which a private room is reserved – 421 E 2nd Ave., Columbus, OH 43201. Additional portfolio reviews are welcomed at this time.
