On the heels of the closing of the Rocky Mountain News the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has stopped the presses. As had been speculated the 146-year-old Seattle daily will now deliver the news online only, a move the entire industry will be watching closely.
The newsroom was told by Editor and Publisher Roger Oglesby Monday morning that Tuesday would be the final print edition. The 146-year-old newspaper’s last front page was a full-page photo of the newspaper’s trademark neon globe taken by Staff Photographer Mike Urban.
Now 20 of the 170 PI’s journalists will remain to staff SeattlePI.com. Bean counters across the country will be watching to see exactly how much revenue a news Web site can produce in a major metropolitan area. Up till now it’s all been a guessing game. Full story
The news was not good at two McClatchy properties in the northwest on Monday. The News Tribune in Tacoma cut the staff by 30, and the Olympian cut 15. No word as of yet on the fate of former ONPA member Steven Herppich who worked at The Olympian.
