After doing a little research and finding federal and state grant money, Creech built a one-third-acre pond to raise the shrimp, or Malaysian river prawns, in Albany, Ohio. She had hopes that the 5,530 hatchlings she added in June would've turned into about 350 pounds of shrimp. But after she and more than 40 of her neighbors, friends, and other volunteers drained the pond, they found only 136 pounds of prawn.
