ONPA Judging and seminar returns to Ohio University

The 67th edition of the ONPA Contest Judging and Seminar returns to Ohio University’s School of Visual Communications, April 13-15. All events over the three days will be at Ohio University’s Schoonover Center (20 E. Union St., Athens, OH)

Judging of single images will begin Friday at 4:30 pm and resume Saturday morning with stories and portfolios. Results will be posted on the ONPA website at the conclusion of each category.

Judging this years contest will be former White House News Photographers Association and Pictures of the Year International Photographer of the Year Nancy Andrews. Andrews will be joined by Sarah Ann Jump currently working as a staff photographer at The (Jasper, IN) Herald documenting small town life in rural Dubois County, Indiana.

Also judging will be OU graduate Patrick Tehan who recently retired from the San Jose Mercury News. Among Tehan’s many distinctions include runner-up Newspaper
Photographer of the Year for 1992, National Press Photographers Association. He also was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times and was a finalist in 2003. Tehan got his start though at the Kettering-Oakwood Times in Ohio were he won the 1980 ONPA Clip Photographer of the Year.

On Saturday evening Mary Mannix from Canon will hold a workshop, highlighting new equipment with lighting, video demonstrations as well. Canon representatives
will be on site Saturday and Sunday in Room 276 to clean and check cameras and show off new gear.

Midwest Photo will have a Rental Equipment representative in Room 276 on Sunday as well.

There will also be portfolio reviews Saturday evening for those who sign up.

On Sunday Sue Morrow, a visiting professional at E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University will join the judges as a speaker for the day-long seminar which begins at 10 a.m.

You can’t have a convention without a business meeting so stop in Sunday to see what plans the new ONPA Board has in store and lend your voice to the organization’s future.

As with any ONPA event there will be plenty of door prizes graciously provided by our major sponsors: Canon, Nikon, ThinkTank and Sony which not only benefits you when you win, but also helps the ONPA treasury by the sale of raffle tickets.

Major sponsor awards will follow the speaking presentations on Sunday.
