Spot News
1st- Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Restroom Note"
2nd - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "Westerville Police"
3rd - Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch, "Westerville Police"

Judges comments: First place: Strong detail that tells the whole story of a bomb scare. Rarely will you have the opportunity to see notes like this as they're washed away or covered up.

General News
1st - Kyle Robertson, The Columbus Dispatch, "Funeral Services"
2nd - Joshua A. Bickel, The Columbus Dispatch, "Westerville Vigil"
3rd - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Rainy Rally"

Judges comments: First place: Unique frame for a funeral procession that's anchored by Jim Morrow. Second place: While it's expected in our job, this photo shows the importance of gathering names. The names of the mother and son, as well as their ties to the police department add context and emotion to the already strong photo. Third place: Great use of colors in what was probably a very dreary day.

Feature
1st - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, "Big"
2nd- Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Cookout"
3rd - Eric Albrecht, The Columbus Dispatch, "Fixing the Ropes"

Judges comments: First place: Fantastic image. While it wouldn't be hard to create an interesting image that includes this art piece, you did a great job framing the image and photographing it at the perfect time of day.

Sports Action
1st - Patricia Schaeffer, The (Lisbon) Morning Journal, "Missed Dunk"
2nd - Fred Squillante, The Columbus Dispatch, "Pass"
3rd - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "Puck Stop"

Judges comments: First place: This is such a great moment that rarely happens in basketball. Years of covering basketball and I've never seen a kid miss a dunk and fight for the rebound while hanging onto the rim.

Sports Feature
1st - Adam Cairns, The Columbus Dispatch, "Big Ten Champ"
2nd - Leah Klafczynski, Akron Beacon Journal, "And 1"
3rd - Brooke LaValley, The Columbus Dispatch, "PBA"

Judges comments: First place: The ability to see her eyes through her goggles really makes this photo.

Portrait
1st - Jonathan Quilter, The Columbus Dispatch, "Government Affairs"
2nd - Barbara J. Perenic, The Columbus Dispatch, "Blood Volunteer"
3rd - Jonathan Quilter, The Columbus Dispatch, "Penguin"

Judges comments: First place: Well framed, evenly lit. Nice balance of colors through the image.

Story/Essay
1st - Jonathan Quilter, The Columbus Dispatch, "Police Funeral"
2nd - Jeremy Wadsworth, The Blade, "Sebastian"
3rd - Kurt Steiss, The Blade, "UT On the Road"

Judges comments: First place: What drew me to this story was your ability to move around so much during such a sensitive time, particularly the photo with the urn. Second place: Very strong images of Sebastian's entire family that show a wide variety of emotion. Third place: Great behind the scenes moments here. Though I'd narrow down the take a little bit to highlight the strongest images.
